The scope of the Athens test site is the collection of real time data and historical data for use by Public Authorities and Transport Planners, professional fleets, as well as for multi-modal trip planning and real time traffic services. The demonstration area and the services planned to be implemented in Athens are described here.
Athens site has finalised the identification of user needs for daily trip planning and of authorities for overall traffic and transport planning and management, as well as the overall system architecture.
In the framework of the detailed system design Individual task forces have been set up for specific site's architectural issues. The task forces concern:
- Overall architecture,
- Individual FCD architecture,
- On-board architecture and
- Development of traffic model and interaction between real time traffic information platform and Observatory.
Each of the aforementioned task force will develop its own functional and physical architecture and a consolidated approach will be produced with functional view and use cases.
In the context of the Athens pilot, thirty taxi vehicles shall be equipped with on-board equipment. All units shall be primarily deployed for the acquisition of FCD data, whilst ten shall also be used for the demonstration of real-time traffic services to professional drivers (taxi drivers). There is already an agreement with a Taxi company and during the current first stage twenty taxi vehicles will be equipped with on-board equipment, while the implementation of FCD module is under deployment.
In the scope of VIAJEO's Athens demo site activities a workshop was organised in October 2010 in Athens: "Transport planning and provision of traffic information in the city of Athens" with the goal to inform the local stakeholders on the Viajeo Project in general and on the Athens pilot in particular. Representatives from almost all the transport authorities and transit companies of Athens participated as well as from the Ministry of Infrastructure Transport and Networks, the Hellenic Institute of Transportation Engineers, ITS Hellas and other relevant organizations. The first objective of the workshop was to bring together different authorities who have the responsibility of planning, management and operation of the whole transport fleet and network of Athens city but also to reach out to the authorities who have advisory character in the sector of transport. The second objective was to grasp the perception of the participants regarding the existence of different data sources, how these data sources could be integrated and managed, what kind of services would it be valuable to be developed and generally how all these authorities could contribute in a more efficient way for the Athens pilot and for the project framework generally.
